Affiliate Marketing for Beginners

Affiliate marketing is a complicated beast to tackle. There are so many variables to affiliate marketing and it takes a lot of work to be successful.

What is Affiliate Marketing?
affiliate marketing

Definition: A way for a company to sell its products by signing up individuals or companies (“affiliates”) who market the company’s products for a commission.

Affiliate marketing has become an enormous online industry. It has become an effective way for marketers to sell their merchandise and services, and for publishers to profit from their audiences.

Affiliate marketing’s basic factors needed:

  • A service or product
  • A person with a service or product to sell
  • A person who has the ability and the willingness to sell that service or product

A merchant has a service or product they need to be sold, and an affiliate marketer sells the product of service for a small percentage or commission. these can be a one-time payout or recurring pay monetization. Basic sales 101. Simple right?

As an affiliate marketer, you can join a company directly through a merchant, or through networks that handle the merchant’s affiliate transactions.

Be Serious about Your Business

The two pitfalls I see the most in affiliate marketing is people don’t affiliate marketing seriously. Why?

affiliate marketing

Two reasons:

  1. It is very inexpensive (even free )to start your business.
  2. Too many con-artists claiming that its easy money.

If you invested $50,000 into a brick and mortar business, you would work your ass off to make sure it succeeded, right? So why don’t people do this with affiliate marketing? Because losing $300 worth of a start-up fee is easier to shrug off.

The other problem is that all of these people that make money monetize on the fact that the public wants easy money fast. It isn’t a lottery people. Actually, this can be one of the slowest ways, for some to get started seeing an income. But what’s great about the internet is that your works will pay off and will always be there. What you publish stays published. Treat it like a business and the money will follow. My fist month I made a whopping $1.68. It was so exciting that I couldn’t stop talking about it!

It may not cost a bunch of money to do affiliate marketing but you do have to invest a lot of time.

  1. This is very informative. Thank you for posting all this info for us who are at the beginning of the journey.
It would be very useful for me to come back sometimes and read your posts.
Good luck to you, too. 🙂

  2. I’ve been affiliate marketing for over 8 years now. I absolutely love it. Here are the pros of getting into affiliate marketing:

Don’t have to own the service/products.
    Low cost to start up.
    Can work from home.
Don’t have to deal with customers.
    Passive income.
    Your your own boss.
Can do any niche you want.

However, I was wanting to know what do you think are the cons of affiliate marketing?

    1. Garen,
Some may think a disadvantage of affiliate marketing is the time you must invest to get started. If you are starting from scratch and don’t know much about computers and the internet, it takes a longer time. There are some ruthless people who hijack affiliate links, stealing their commission in the process.
Also, the people that scam people by selling them the “get rich quick” nonsense. Any more questions, Garen give me a holler.

  3. Hi Ed ! This is a great way to help newbie to understand what is affiliate marketing and what it consist of. As an affiliate marketer myself I really recommend anyone who read this to consider affiliate marketing because it is something so much fun and enjoyable. I really like the way you describbed the 2 pitfalls as this is true. People don’t really care about losing 100-300$ and they might not work as hard as if they would have invest 2000$. I wonder how many people know about affiliate marketing in the world.

    Cheers Ed

Keep up the good work!

  6. As a newbie, I sincerely appreciate the sound advise you are giving out. I have no delusions about making easy money. I have and will keep away from Internet Marketeers suggesting as such. I am in for the long haul of learning and working hard, as you have suggested.
